CONJUNCTIONS (Liên từ)

Liên từ là từ được dùng để nối các từ, cụm từ, mệnh đề hoặc câu.

Các loại liên từ:

1. Liên từ kết hợp:

- Chỉ sự thêm vào: and, both …and, not only … but also, as well as, besides, furthermore, moreover, in addition

Ex: I don’t want to go shopping. Besides, I haven’t got any money.

- Chỉ sự mâu thuẫn, trái ngược: but, yet, however, nevertheless, on the other hand

Ex: She worked hard, yet she failed.

- Chỉ sự lựa chọn, đoán chừng: or, or else, otherwise, either …or, neither … nor

Ex: Which color do you want – red, yellow, blue or grey?

- Chỉ hậu quả, kết quả: so, therefore, consequently, as a result

Ex: There weren’t enough beds, so we had to sleep on the floor.

2. Liên từ phụ thuộc:

- Chỉ mối quan hệ về thời gian: when, whenever, while, as soon as, before, until, till,…

Ex: I’ll lend you this book when I finish reading it.

- Chỉ nguyên nhân, lý do: because, as, since

Ex: We were late for school because it rained heavily.

- Chỉ điều kiện: if, unless, in case, supposing that

- Chỉ sự tương phản: though, although, even though, even if

- Chỉ mục đích: in order that, so that, for fear that (vì sợ)

Ex: We spoke in whispers for fear that we might wake the baby.

- Chỉ kết quả: so + adj/adv + that; such + a/an + adj + that

- Đưa ra môt tuyên bố, ý kiến, lý do: that
